Meicalshuttersoionalcamerascouldcloseveryfast,butoseesomeformsofanimalmotion,suchastheflappingofthewingsofahummierphysitssuexplosisescalesofthousandthsofased,wereoutofreach。TosolvethisprertonatMITinthe1950siedanewkindofnon-meicalshutter,basedonanopticalswitch。Hewasabletotake‘still’photographsofexplosions,forihisdevice。
