Whatthismeansifhtinthevisibleregiorum,itispossibletoproducepulseswithadurationofabout2fs。Amazingly,lightsourcesderivedfromlasersowroutinelyproducepulsesofsuchstartliheyarebasedonthemode-logteiquedesChapter5。

Buttheseareburstsoflightthatoature,heshortestthatbeprodualaboratory。Thathoestolightsourceswithmuchshewavelengths。Forihesiyoueasilyseethatifthewavelengthisshortehedurationofanopticalcycleisredupriionofthepulsebereduced。Thisapproatlyholdstherecordfortheworld’sshortesttrollablelightpulses。Byshieonanatomicgas,aproashigh-harmoiowaveswithafrequencymultiplesofseveraltenslaserfrequency。Thisallowspulseswithduratioensofattoseds(10-18s,orabillionbillionthofased)。Theseareunimaginablyshortburstsoflight,withduratiohetimeittakesaooscillatewithinanatom。
